At present the Xuejian area is divided into the recreation area (Xuejian) and ordinary restricted area (Mt. Beikeng, Mt Dongxishui and Simaxian Forest Road etc) and visitors do not need a park entry permit to enter these areas. However, to enter the restricted mountain areas visitors must first apply for a mountain permit at a local police station (Shei-pa National Park Police Corps, Dahu Police Station, Zhongxing Inspection Post, Da-an Police Station, Xiangbi Police Station and Meiyuan Police Station).

Part of Beikeng River Historic Trail is in Mt. Jiaren Ecological Protected Area (Shu Saddle to the northern entrance of the trail-Dalu Forest Road west) and a park permit is required to enter. Beikeng River Historic Trail was damaged by Typhoon Aere and parts collapsed and remain impassable. Until the trail is repaired it remains closed to visitors.
